Brand Story

Founded around 1900 in the late Qing Dynasty by Wang Futang, a migrant from Hebei, Laodu Yichu began as a humble dumpling shop in Fujiadian (now Daowai District), Harbin. At the time, Harbin was a bustling hub of the Chinese Eastern Railway, attracting merchants from all over. Wang used his family's secret filling recipe and hand-rolled wrappers to create dumplings that were thin-skinned, generously filled, and deliciously juicy. During the Republican era, the shop moved to Zhengyang Street and was renamed 'Laodu Yichu,' meaning 'old brand, unique place.' After the 1956 public-private partnership, it joined the state-owned catering system but preserved its traditional techniques. Following reform and opening-up, the brand was revived, and its dumpling banquet has hosted many national leaders, making it a culinary icon of Harbin. The restaurant has witnessed Harbin's transformation from a frontier town to an international city, and its dumpling-making craft, blending the culinary wisdom of Shandong and Hebei migrants, stands as a vital representative of Northeast China's food culture.

Cultural Note

The craft of Laodu Yichu's dumplings emphasizes 'thin wrappers, generous fillings, and savory broth.' The dough is made with alternating cold and hot water, rolled thin at the edges and slightly thicker in the center. The fillings follow a secret recipe, and dumplings are made fresh to order. This century-old technique reflects the Northeast's culinary character, balancing rustic boldness with meticulous refinement.
