Founded in Guizhou during the Qing Dynasty, Liao Yuanhe Tang traces its origins to the Liao family, who practiced medicine and gathered herbs in the Miao mountains. During the Daoguang reign (1821-1850), the family opened a pharmacy in Guiyang named 'Yuanhe', symbolizing 'harmony of all things and enduring vitality'. Their prescriptions integrated Miao folk remedies with TCM theories, specializing in rheumatism and injuries. The second-generation heir, Liao Jinghe (c.1840-1900), collected folk secrets and refined pill, powder, ointment, and plaster making, spreading the pharmacy's fame. During the Republic era (1912-1949), the pharmacy upheld 'authentic ingredients and meticulous processing' despite wartime hardships. After 1956, it merged into a state-owned factory, preserving its craft. In 2006, Guizhou Liao Yuanhe Tang Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. revived the brand, focusing on modernizing Miao medicine. The brand embodies the fusion and inheritance of ethnic medicine in Guizhou, a microcosm of southwestern China's TCM development.
