Brand Story
Founded during the Tongzhi reign of the Qing Dynasty (c. 1862-1874) by the Yan family, Ningbo herbal merchants, Renhetang started as a small shop in Shanghai's Nanshi district. Known for selecting premium herbs and fair dealing, it gained a solid reputation. During the Guangxu reign (1875-1908), the second-generation heir Yan Xinhou expanded the shop, adding in-house physicians and establishing a 'front shop, back factory' model. In the Republican era (1912-1949), Renhetang became famous for its self-made ointments, pills, and powders, especially the 'Renshen Zaizao Wan' (Ginseng Rejuvenation Pill). After public-private partnership in 1956, it merged into Shanghai's traditional Chinese medicine industry. Renhetang has witnessed the evolution of TCM commerce since Shanghai's opening as a port, embodying the integrity of Jiangnan merchants and representing Shanghai-style TCM culture.
