Sanxiangzhai was founded in the Qing Dynasty, with the exact year yet to be verified. According to legend, during the Qianlong reign (1736-1795), a tea merchant surnamed Zhou from Jiangsu opened a tea house in Suzhou. He named it 'Sanxiangzhai' (Three Fragrances Studio) because he scented his teas with three fragrant flowers: osmanthus, jasmine, and magnolia. The teas became famous for their 'three fragrances'—floral, tea, and fruity—and were beloved by local literati. In the late Qing and early Republic period, the third-generation heir Zhou Mingyuan refined the scenting technique, making the aroma more enduring. Besides selling tea, Sanxiangzhai also hosted tea gatherings, becoming a gathering place for Jiangnan scholars to appreciate tea and discuss ideas, significantly influencing local tea culture. Today, Sanxiangzhai still adheres to traditional tea-making techniques, carrying forward a century of tea heritage.
