Legend has it that to honor Guan Yu, a famed general of the Three Kingdoms period, locals built a temple dedicated to him at the summit, which later evolved into a complex blending Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism. During the Kangxi reign of the Qing Dynasty (1662-1722), craftsmen constructed a nine-story pavilion along the cliff for easier ascent, and during the Guangxu reign (1875-1908), three more stories were added, forming a twelve-story tower reaching 56 meters in height. Entirely of wood and without a single nail, it is an architectural marvel. Shibaozhai not only embodies the wisdom of ancient craftsmen but also serves as a vital cultural landmark of the Three Gorges region, witnessing the prosperity of river shipping and the continuity of folk beliefs since the Ming and Qing dynasties. Its unique 'fortress-mountain' integration has earned it the title 'Pearl on the River,' and it was designated a National Key Cultural Relic Protection Unit in 2001.
