Founded in 1862 during the Tongzhi era of the Qing Dynasty, Tianyitang was established in Hangzhou by Yan Xinhou, a medicine merchant from Ningbo. Tianyitang specialized in ginseng, antler, pills, powders, ointments, and various herbs, and was renowned for its Quanlu Wan (Whole Deer Pill) and Huju Muguajiu (Tiger Bone and Papaya Wine). Its prescriptions, derived from imperial court secrets and folk remedies, were validated by renowned physicians and gained widespread trust. During the late Qing and early Republic, Tianyitang expanded to Shanghai and other cities, becoming a prominent pharmacy in the Jiangnan region. Through wartime relocations, it continued its mission of healing. After 1956, it merged into Hangzhou Huqingyutang, and the brand was revived in the 2000s, preserving its legacy of rigorous craftsmanship and integrity.
