Brand Story

Wang Xing Ji Fan Workshop was founded in Hangzhou in 1875 (the first year of the Guangxu reign) by Wang Xingzhai. Wang learned fan-making from his father and excelled in crafting black paper fans. He selected high-mountain bamboo from western Zhejiang and Xuan paper from Anhui, undergoing multiple meticulous processes. The fan surface was coated with persimmon lacquer, giving it a glossy black finish and durability. His wife, Chen Ying, was also a skilled fan maker, and together they refined their craft. Adhering to the principle of 'fine workmanship yields exquisite products,' their fans were sold both domestically and internationally, favored by scholars and literati. During the late Qing and early Republic periods, Wang Xing Ji's black paper fans were presented as tribute to the imperial court, earning the title 'Tribute Fans.' In the Republic era, the main store was established on Qinghefang Street in Hangzhou, making it a leader in Jiangnan's fan industry. Wang Xing Ji not only preserved traditional techniques but also integrated calligraphy and painting onto fan surfaces, transforming fans into cultural artifacts that combine utility and art, embodying the refinement and elegance of Jiangnan culture. In 2008, its fan-making craft was inscribed on the National Intangible Cultural Heritage list, making it a cultural treasure among China's time-honored brands.

“Fine craftsmanship yields exquisite fans, passed down through a millennium.”
