Brand Story

Wang Zhihe's history dates back to the 8th year of the Kangxi reign in the Qing Dynasty (1669). Wang Zhihe, a native of Xianyuan, Anhui, failed the imperial examination in Beijing and, to make a living, opened a tofu workshop on Yanshou Temple Street. One day, he accidentally salted leftover tofu and discovered months later that it had developed a unique flavor—stinky yet fragrant. He refined the process and created stinky tofu. Its distinctive taste soon made it a popular delicacy among Beijing residents. In the late Qing Dynasty, Wang Zhihe's products were introduced to the imperial court, where Empress Dowager Cixi appreciated them and bestowed the name 'Qingfang' (literally 'green square'). During the Republic of China era, Wang Zhihe became a leader in Beijing's sauce industry. Its craftsmanship, passed down through generations, blends northern fermentation techniques with Huizhou bean product traditions, reflecting the fusion of folk wisdom and imperial culture. The brand is not only a symbol of Beijing's culinary heritage but also a witness to the evolution of traditional Chinese fermented foods, embodying the prosperity of market commerce and the spirit of craftsmanship since the Ming and Qing dynasties.
