The Xiling Seal Art Society was established in 1904 (the 30th year of Guangxu's reign) on Gushan (Solitary Hill) in Hangzhou by four Zhejiang seal carvers: Ding Fuzhi, Wang Fuan, Ye Weiming, and Wu Yin. Their mission was to promote traditional culture, preserve ancient inscriptions, and advance the study of seal arts. In 1913, the renowned artist Wu Changshuo was elected as the first president, whose exceptional skill and charisma brought the society widespread acclaim. It attracted master carvers from home and abroad and amassed a rich collection of artifacts, including the Han Dynasty 'Stele of the Three Elders' housed in the Han Sanlao Stone Chamber.
