Founded in 1942 (the 31st year of the Republic of China) by patriotic democrat Li Gongpu on Beimen Street in Kunming, Beimen Bookstore emerged during the stalemate phase of the War of Resistance. Li Gongpu, with the motto 'promoting culture and serving society,' turned the bookstore into a vital platform for spreading progressive thought and uniting intellectuals. Beyond selling books, it hosted reading clubs and lectures, attracting scholars like Wen Yiduo and Wu Han, and became a meeting place for teachers and students of Southwest Associated University and people from all walks of life. After Li Gongpu was assassinated in 1946, the bookstore was forced to close, but its spirit endured. Beimen Bookstore witnessed the cultural resistance of Yunnan during the war and remains an important cultural symbol of China's democratic movement, embodying intellectuals' commitment to saving the nation through books and enlightening the public.
