The craft of Gao's Sancai dates back to the Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD), when Tang Sancai, as burial objects, flourished in the Luoyang area. The ancestors of the Gao family were artisans who fired Sancai during the Tang Dynasty, passing down the skill through generations, surviving the Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties. Around 1900, at the end of the Qing Dynasty and the beginning of the Republic of China, Gao Liangtian, a descendant of the Gao family, revived the family craft in Nanshishan Village, Mengjin, Luoyang. He meticulously studied the glazes and forms of ancient Sancai, bringing the long-lost technique back to life. Gao's Sancai features hand-molded bodies and double firing, with glazes that flow naturally, creating a riot of colors, primarily yellow, green, and white, with occasional blue and purple. The works include traditional subjects such as horses, camels, and figures, with vivid shapes and lustrous glazes, reflecting the pinnacle of Tang sculpture and ceramic art.
