Founded in Shanghai in the 1930s by the Hongbang tailors, Hongdu was celebrated for its mastery of Western-style suit making. In 1956, to support the capital's development, key members moved to Beijing and established the Beijing Hongdu Clothing Store. Since then, Hongdu has been the official tailor for Party and state leaders, including Chairman Mao Zedong, whose iconic Zhongshan suit (later known as the 'Mao suit') was crafted here. Hongdu witnessed pivotal moments in New China's diplomacy and politics. Its techniques, inherited from the Hongbang school, emphasize the 'four skills' (cutting, handwork, machining, and ironing) and blend Chinese and Western tailoring methods. After the reform and opening-up, Hongdu embraced the market while retaining its high-end bespoke heritage, making it a standout among Beijing's time-honored brands.
