According to the Yongcheng County Annals, during the Ming and Qing dynasties (1368-1912), several family-run breweries, such as the Zhang Family Winery, thrived in the area. They used local high-quality sorghum and wheat, along with mineral-rich well water, and fermented in traditional mud pits to develop a unique flavor. In 1958, the Yongcheng County government consolidated these folk breweries into the state-owned Yongcheng Distillery, later renamed Huang Gou. The enterprise preserves ancient methods while incorporating modern technology, creating a sesame-aroma baijiu that filled a gap in Henan's liquor styles. Huang Gou not only carries local cultural memories but also, through the legend of 'Imperial Huang Gou Wine,' has become a significant symbol of Central Plains liquor culture.
