The Peace Hotel, located on the Bund, was originally built as the Cathay Hotel by British-Jewish tycoon Victor Sassoon in 1929. It was one of the most luxurious hotels in the Far East at the time. Designed by Chicago School architects in the Art Deco style, it hosted numerous dignitaries and celebrities, including Charlie Chaplin and George Bernard Shaw.
