Time-Honored BrandShisan Cun · Hunan · Founded
Shisan Cun, a time-honored brand from Linxiang, Hunan, preserves the ancient art of pickling vegetables with a history of over a thousand years. Its intangible cultural heritage techniques and Three Kingdoms cultural roots offer a unique taste of traditional Chinese flavors.
Brand Story
Shisan Cun is located in Yanglousi Town, Linxiang, Hunan, historically a garrison area for the Wu Kingdom during the Three Kingdoms period. After the Battle of Chibi, General Huang Gai stationed troops here and, noticing the region's abundant produce, ordered soldiers to pickle vegetables using ancient methods for military supplies. This practice later spread to civilians and evolved through the Tang, Song, Ming, and Qing dynasties, reaching scale by the late Qing. According to the Linxiang County Gazetteer, during the Guangxu reign, there were over ten pickling workshops, with Shisan Cun being the most renowned, named after the thirteen nearby villages. In the Republic era, its pickles were sold across Hunan, Hubei, and Jiangxi. After 1949, inheritor Li Guowu (born 1958) dedicated himself to reviving traditional techniques, founding Hunan Shisan Cun Food Co., Ltd. in 1993, blending ancient methods with modern technology to rejuvenate this millennium-old flavor.

Cultural Note
The pickling technique of Shisan Cun follows the ancient principle of 'sun-drying by day, dew-moistening by night,' emphasizing 'three suns and three picklings.' Local vegetables are washed in well water, salted with coarse salt, and then exposed to sunlight and dew, resulting in golden, crisp pickles. This craft embodies the wisdom of Hunan's agricultural culture and reflects the philosophy of harmonious coexistence between humans and nature.
