Tanyanji was founded in 1920 (the ninth year of the Republic of China) by Tan Zhixiang, a native of Huangpi, Hubei, in Hankou. Starting as a street vendor selling boiled dumplings from a shoulder pole, Tan later opened a shop. He created the signature 'Tan-style dumplings,' known for their thin wrappers, tender fillings, and savory broth, quickly gaining fame across Wuhan's three towns. His son, Tan Yinshan, inherited the craft and further refined the recipe, making Tanyanji a representative of Wuhan snacks. During the War of Resistance, the shop briefly closed but reopened afterward. Tanyanji has witnessed the evolution of modern Wuhan's food culture, and its dumpling-making technique has been listed as intangible cultural heritage, becoming an important symbol of Jingchu culinary tradition.
