The history of Xidan Department Store dates back to 1930 (the 19th year of the Republic of China), when a temporary market formed at the south end of Xidan intersection. Merchants later pooled funds to build the 'Xidan Vegetable Market'. In 1940 (the 29th year of the Republic of China), it was expanded into 'Xidan Department Store', becoming a key commercial venue in western Beijing. After the founding of New China, the store underwent public-private partnership in 1956, was renamed 'Xidan Department Store' in 1972 during the Cultural Revolution, and restored its original name in 1978. Following reform and opening-up, the store underwent multiple renovations and expansions. In 1993 (the year of Guiyou), it became the first department store in Beijing to exceed 1 billion yuan in sales, earning the title 'A Banner of Beijing Commerce'. Its development mirrors the evolution of China's department store industry from traditional markets to modern shopping centers, and epitomizes the changing lives of Beijing residents.
