Brand Story

Founded during the Guangxu reign of the Qing Dynasty (c. 1875-1908), Xinxingyuan originated as a restaurant called 'Xinxingyuan' in the old town of Jilin City. According to local chronicles, it was established by a Manchu chef named Nala, specializing in Manchu-style dishes. Known for its meticulous ingredient selection and precise cooking techniques, it quickly became a gathering place for local officials and merchants. During the Republic of China era, the restaurant was renamed 'Xinxingyuan' and incorporated Shandong cuisine techniques, creating a unique 'Northern ingredients, Southern cooking' style. It temporarily closed during the Japanese occupation but reopened in 1946. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, it underwent public-private partnership and later became state-owned. Following the reform and opening-up, Xinxingyuan revived its traditional dishes and trained a number of renowned Jilin cuisine chefs. Its signature dishes, such as 'Guobaorou' (sweet and sour pork) and 'Bairou Xuechang' (white meat and blood sausage), have been listed as intangible cultural heritage of Jilin City. However, due to a lack of historical records, its exact founding year and early lineage remain to be verified.

Cultural Note

Xinxingyuan is a living fossil of Jilin City's culinary culture, blending Manchu, Han, and Shandong cuisine essences while preserving traditional Jilin cooking methods. The restaurant insists on using local ingredients such as Songhua River fish and Changbai Mountain delicacies, with a focus on heat control and knife skills. Its dishes not only satisfy the palate but also carry the historical memory and folk customs of the Jilin region. However, due to the lack of systematic historical documentation, some details of its traditional techniques are yet to be explored.
