Brand Story

Founded in 1926 by Chen Deming from Nanhai, Guangdong, Xinya began as a tea house offering Cantonese dim sum. In 1932, it moved to its current location on East Nanjing Road and became Xinya Cantonese Restaurant, the first large-scale Cantonese eatery in Shanghai. Chen's mastery of Cantonese cuisine, including roast meats, dim sum, and mooncakes, quickly won over locals. During the War of Resistance, Xinya remained open, hosting literary figures like Lu Xun and Ba Jin, adding cultural luster. After 1949, it was nationalized but preserved its traditions, later innovating with products like Xinya mooncakes. Its history mirrors Shanghai's culinary evolution, epitomizing the phrase 'Eat in Guangzhou, taste in Shanghai.'
