Gucheng Distillery, located in Qitai County, Xinjiang, traces its origins to the Qianlong era of the Qing Dynasty (around 1755), when Qitai was a thriving hub on the northern Silk Road. According to the Qitai County Gazetteer, by the late Qing and early Republic period, 'Gucheng Shaojiu' (Gucheng Distilled Liquor) was already renowned for its clear, refreshing taste, crafted from sorghum and wheat using the traditional 'Lao Wu Zheng' (five-time steaming) technique. In 1958, the state-owned Qitai County Distillery was established, consolidating folk workshops and preserving ancient methods. In the 1980s, it was renamed 'Xinjiang Gucheng Distillery,' and its products repeatedly won provincial quality awards. The brand name 'Gucheng' derives from the ancient name of Qitai, 'Guchengzi,' carrying memories of frontier garrison life and caravan trade. Today, Gucheng still adheres to pure grain solid-state fermentation, and its brewing technique is listed in Xinjiang's Intangible Cultural Heritage, making it a living fossil of Xinjiang's baijiu culture.
