Historical records indicate that around 1644, during the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, Shanxi merchants introduced inland brewing techniques to Huzhu, which were adapted to local barley, gradually forming a unique craft. By the Qianlong reign (c. 1736), Huzhu boasted distilleries, and its 'Weiyuan Shaojiu' gained fame. During the Republic era, the industry flourished with brands like 'Tianyoude'. After 1949, the Huzhu Highland Barley Wine Factory was established, preserving and refining traditional methods. Its brewing technique, now a Qinghai provincial intangible cultural heritage, reflects Han-Tibetan cultural fusion and highland ingenuity.
