Nanputuo Temple, located at the foot of Wulao Peak in Xiamen, was first built in the late Tang and Five Dynasties period as Sizhou Yuan. During the Northern Song Dynasty, monks expanded it and renamed it Puzhao Temple. In the late Ming and early Qing, the temple fell into disrepair due to wars. In 1683, after recovering Taiwan, Marquis Shi Lang stationed in Xiamen and, seeing the ruins, decided to rebuild it. Because it enshrined Guanyin Bodhisattva, similar to the Putuo Mountain in Zhejiang, it was renamed Nanputuo Temple. Since then, the temple has flourished as a sacred site of Minnan Buddhism. The temple's vegetarian cuisine has a long history, initially served only to monks and later opened to the public. The art of making Nanputuo vegetarian pastries has been passed down through generations, using fine flour, vegetable oil, sugar, and various nuts, baked with traditional techniques.
