Its predecessor was the Sun Company (Daxin Gongsi), founded in 1936 by Cai Chang, an overseas Chinese from Australia. As one of Shanghai's four major department stores at the time, it was renowned for pioneering the underground shopping mall and the first escalator in China. In 1953, it was transformed into the state-owned Shanghai No.1 Department Store, becoming the first state-owned retail department store in New China.
