Brand Story
Zhulaoda zongzi originated in Jiaxing, Zhejiang, created by Zhu Guangchao (known as 'Zhulaoda') during the Qing Dynasty around 1887. At that time, most Jiaxing zongzi were plain boiled rice dumplings. Zhu improved the recipe by selecting premium glutinous rice and pork hind leg meat, seasoned with soy sauce and cooking wine, creating the savory pork zongzi. He also crafted sweet red bean paste zongzi with smooth bean paste and lard. His zongzi were celebrated for being 'glutinous yet not mushy, rich but not greasy, tender and fragrant,' quickly gaining popularity across Jiangnan. During the Republic of China era, Zhulaoda zongzi became a famous Jiaxing specialty, rivaling brands like Wufangzhai. After the founding of New China, the craft was preserved, and today, Zhulaoda still insists on handmade production, maintaining traditional flavors. Zhulaoda zongzi are not just a delicacy but also carry the culinary culture of Jiangnan and a century-old artisan spirit.
